Post-game Remarks

MEN'S GAMES

Western Illinois beat Centenary 68-59, but to hear Doug Greenwald call it, there was no point in Centenary fans even tuning in tonight. A Gent hit a 30 footer (via Divine Intervention apparently), otherwise it would have been 12-0 WIU instead of 12-3. Several times he apologized to his adoring fans for having to be so negative, but the Gents apparently left the "A" game in the dorms and their "C" game in the locker room, choosing instead to stink up the already (allegedly) malodorous Gold Dome with what Monty Python's Flying Circus once called "an extraordinary display of inertia". With 9 minutes to go, and WIU regaining a 9 point lead, Greenwald declared the game over. There was never any attempt to hide the disgust in his voice.

This after the Ladies gave the Westerwinds a real run for their money in the early game.

IUPUI handled Oakland 87-72 without too much trouble. The OU student doing the game by telephone line (I've gotten tired of listening to Greg Rakestraw for some reason) was sitting right next to the OU bench and was constantly taking odds on whether or not Greg Kampe would manage to survive the entire game without being ejected or suffering a heart attack.

The Chicago State Cougars managed to make life a little difficult in the Mabee Center, but ORU won by 11, 69-58. I would listen to the CSU play-by-play except they only do home games. Besides, AM 690 (WCSU) doesn't seem to carry even the home games, all indications on the CSU and Mid-Con.com (Media Links) webpages to the contrary. Actually, there's really nothing wrong with ORU's Mark Neely, I just like to listen to different play-by-plays once in a while.

Southern Utah was likewise it's usual pesky self at the ARC tonight - pesky and coming up short. Valpo generally handled them, winning 76-64, but the T-Birds never seem to go away.

As Doug Greenwald mentioned several times tonight, the Gents REALLY screwed the pooch on this one, because the Leathernecks now own the tie-breaker between the 2 teams.

The standings remained the same, except that Valpo and Southern Utah exchanged positions, Valpo moving up to 4th and SUU dropping to 5th.

WOMEN'S GAMES

The Westerwinds cocntinue to have trouble putting weaker teams away. This one went right down the wire. The Ladies predictably made a couple of crucial errors down the stretch, but they still had multiple chances to send it to overtime. Western held on for a 57-53 victory. They buckled down when they had to, which is generally what the stronger teams do.

ORU actually dug themselves a deep hole against Chicago State this afternoon at the Mabee Center, but by the time I tuned in again in the 2nd half, ORU had regained the lead. However, the Golden Eagles could not put the Cougars away, and ended up with a nail-biter victory 53-49.

The Jaguars keep rollin' on, apparently not sidetracked by their loss to Valpo last week, besting the Golden Grizzlies of Oakland today, 70-64.

Finally, the T-Birds once again failed miserably to protect their home court, losing to Valpo 69-54. They held Tamra Braun to 2 points, but Cary Myers and Jamie Gutowski were burying 3's all throughout the 2nd half, and Lauren Bechtold even added a couple.
