MEN’S BASKETBALL: Crusaders can’t contain Kangaroos--The Post-Tribune

Feb. 24, 2006

Post-Tribune staff report

It came down to Valparaiso not being able to stop one player and a missed opportunity in the final minute as UMKC blew a late lead, but came back to defeat VU 73-70 in Kansas City on Thursday.

Quinton Day scored a career-high 37 points for the Kangaroos, including the game-winning 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds left from the top of the key.

“Day was unbelievable. Our whole philosophy was to guard the others and hold them to single-digit points,” said VU coach Homer Drew. “He’s so quick. Since he came (to UMKC), we haven’t beaten them. We’ve tried to use different people to guard him, box-and-one. This time we tried letting him score and work on the rest and it almost worked.”

Almost, but not quite with Day’s teammate Kalu Guasco scoring 14 points. Drew noted that if Guasco was held to single-digits like they planned, the Crusaders (16-10, 8-7) would have notched the win.

Day’s heroic moment was needed because UMKC turned the ball over twice in the span of 30 seconds, leading to a game-tying three by Valparaiso’s Ali Berdiel.

But in the end, all Drew could look back on was his own team’s failures at key moments in the game.

“At times we really played well, but we missed some lay-ups and shot 46 percent (7-of-15) from the line,” Drew said.

He also noted that if half of those eight missed free throws were made, victory would have been theirs.

Two of those misses came with less than a minute by senior Dan Oppland, who led the Crusaders with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Ali Berdiel chipped in with 10 points and seven assists, putting him at 501 for his career, third on the VU all-time list behind John McIlvain (586) and Bryce Drew (626).
