WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Centenary no match for Valpo--The Post-Tribune

Feb. 7, 2006

VALPARAISO — With barely one day of rest after a weary weekend of travel from Cedar City, Utah, on Saturday, a blowout was just what the doctor ordered for the Valparaiso women’s squad.

Prescription received and taken on Monday as the Crusaders drained 14 of their first 16 shots on their way to an easy 91-44 victory over Centenary.

The win not only gave the starters a much needed rest following a little jet lag, but it set up a battle for first in the Mid-Con on Saturday when rival Western Illinois comes to the ARC.

The Westerwinds defeated IUPUI 60-57 to drop the latter out of a tie for first with Western and into a tie for second with Valparaiso (14-8, 8-3).

“We haven’t had a game like this in a while,” said VU coach Keith Freeman with a look of relief on his face. “We got off to a terrific start, getting the ball inside right away to establish our size advantage.”

That post presence by Mayella Kuikhoven (14 points, seven rebounds), Tamra Braun (10 points) and penetration from Betsy Rietema (11 points) allowed the shooters to virtually have free reign from the perimeter.

Those three players combined for nine assists in the game, seven of them in the first half.

Among the shooters that took advantage was Andrean grad Jamie Gutowski, who carried over her deadly accuracy of Saturday night into the game against the Ladies (3-20, 2-10).

“I’ve gotten good looks in our offense, and I think it’s because of the play of our post players,” Gutowski said being the consummate teammate as a senior leader.

She hit three 3-pointers in the first half on Monday on her way to 11 points in only 15 minutes. Against Southern Utah on Saturday, she was 6-of-9 from 3-point range for a game-high 20 points.

Maybe the senior sees her final season in brown and gold winding its way down and wants to out on a high note.

“In the back of my mind I know how many games are left,” she admitted. “But I’m more concerned about my team continuing to grow and get better for the tournament.”

With the lead growing almost exponentially — it got up to 40 points with 12:15 left in the contest — it meant Freeman and the starters were able to witness a glimpse of the Crusaders’ future.

The unusual lineup on the floor with around six minutes left was Agnieszka Kulaga, Sarah Ott, Leah Hochstetler, Evva Comans and Sanna Helenius, and the lead actually increased by three from that point to the final buzzer.

“Our regular rotation of eight or nine did very well to get us to that point,” Freeman said. “We still have some players who have to get through that nervous stage in games.”

Most of those bench players got to see the court real early with Helenius and Ott making baskets late in the first half before the game really got out of hand.

“It’s nice when I get to play, but what’s most important is that the team wins,” said Helenius, who finished the first half with a picture-perfect reverse layup at the buzzer.

“We see it every day in practice — the moves she makes and how hard she works,” Gutowski said about Helenius. “It’s great to see your teammates succeed.”

Helenius was pretty humble about her nine points and two assists in 10 minutes.

“That’s pretty much how I used to play,” she said.
