WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: IUPUI moves past VU in conference--The Post-Tribune

Feb. 21, 2006

Post-Tribune staff report

The disappointment continues for the Valparaiso women’s team this season.

With a chance to take sole possession of second place in the Mid-Continent Conference on Monday, the Crusaders didn’t quite play up to coach Keith Freeman’s expectations at IUPUI, losing 63-55 to the Jaguars on their home floor.

The loss ended a 10-game VU winning streak against IUPUI.

The Crusaders (15-10, 9-5) were cold shooting the ball all night, falling behind by 17 points midway through the second half and not being able to recover.

“We needed to work screening, cutting and passing, but the credit goes to their defense,” Freeman said. “They’re a good team — only Western (Illinois) has been able to beat them at their place.”

The victory moves IUPUI (15-9, 10-4) ahead of the Crusaders in the Mid-Con standings with two games remaining.

It wasn’t a memorable start for VU. After scoring on their opening possession, the Crusaders missed their next nine shots from the floor.

Valparaiso struggled shooting from the field and the line in the first half, connecting on just 26.7 percent (8-of-30) from the floor while making just 3-of-7 from the free-throw-line.

Despite the effort, Freeman thinks his team can rebound in less than two weeks if it has to face the Jaguars again.

“I think we can beat them on a neutral court,” he said.

Most of the struggles shooting came from the Crusaders’ top players.

Betsy Rietema led VU with 17 points, but needed to drain 13-of-14 free throws to get there after going 2-of-10 from the field. Tamra Braun only had one point on 0-of-7 shooting and Carrie Myers was 4-of-14 with three of those shots made from three-point range to continue her deadly accuracy from beyond the arc.

Braun added 10 rebounds, five from the offensive end which was a positive for Freeman in the loss.

“We had 21 offensive boards,” he said. “You have to have a great effort to get 21 offensive boards.”

Mayella Kuikhoven tied her career-high with nine rebounds, seven of them on the offensive end, to go with eight points.

Jernisha Cann came off the bench to lead IUPUI with a career-high 21 points, which included 11-of-14 from the free-throw line, and 10 rebounds. Kia Hayes added 12 points while Valparaiso High School grad Brooke McAfee nearly posted a triple-double.

She scored nine points, grabbed 10 rebounds continued her assault on the NCAA record books with 10 blocked shots.

The effort moved McAfee into second place on the NCAA all-time blocks list ahead of Genia Miller of Cal. State Fullerton. She now has 434 career blocks, 46 behind all-time leader Sandora Irvin of Texas Christian.
