VALPARAISO — No way were six Valparaiso University seniors going to walk away from the Athletics Recreation Center without a victory.

In their final home game Saturday, the Crusaders forged an early 10-point lead and beat bench-less Niagara, 88-82.

Forward Dan Oppland led the early charge, grabbing nine rebounds in the first eight minutes as the Crusaders wrapped up a 10-2 season at the ARC.

His 18-point, 12-rebound double-double was needed to overcome Niagara (10-15).

The Purple Eagles, down to seven players and without injured leading scorer Charron Fisher, struggled in the first half, but finished with five players in double figures.

Valparaiso’s sticky matchup zone limited them to 9-for-30 shooting and padded its halftime margin to 42-28.

“We came out with great energy and got off to a good start,” Coach Homer Drew said.

“We knew we couldn’t come out flat or we’d be in trouble,” forward Ron Howard said. “We established ourself early.”

Valparaiso’s all-senior starting lineup connected on 16 of 29 shots, including a pair of NBA 3-pointers from Seth Colclasure.

Valparaiso (16-9) needed that 14-point cushion and .564 marksmanship to rebuff the rallying Metro Atlantic Conference invaders.

Four Crusaders finished in double figures, including Howard (15) and Mohamed Kone (12), but Cliff Brown gave the hosts anxious moments by stashing 25 of his 32 points in the second half.

“We knew about him from the scouting reports,” said guard Ali Berdiel, “but he was on a roll.”

“Unbelievable,” Drew added. “They were tough shots, too.”

Niagara opened the first four minutes of the second half with a 14-3 burst to close to 45-42, but VU regrouped after a timeout.

Oppland swished two free throws, then fed Berdiel on a fast break. Jimmie Miles and Howard buried threes to supply breathing room.

Though Berdiel scored eight of his 10 points in the second half, the Crusaders were unable to outrun Niagara.

“Ali showed great senior leadership, getting the ball to the right people and we got good contributions from Brandon McPherson and the rest of our bench,” Drew said.

With 4:30 left, Berdiel’s 3-pointer and Kone’s 12-footer boosted VU’s margin to 80-65.

Niagara refused to roll over, mainly because of Brown. He scored 10 points down the stretch, but Colclasure’s two free throws with 35 seconds put the game out of reach.

“Brown’s a load,” Howard said. “So efficient. Got to be one of the most underrated players we’ve seen.”

The Crusaders played without guard Jarryd Loyd (strep throat), Moussa Mbaye (right knee) and Shawn Huff (broken left foot).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Valparaiso seniors relish double OT in home finale--The Post-Tribune

Feb. 19, 2006

By Justin Breen / Post-Tribune deputy sports editor

VALPARAISO — Saturday was a special day for Lauren Bechtold and Jamie Gutowski, two seniors who chose to hone their skills near home.

Saturday’s 75-67 victory in double overtime against Chicago State marked the Valparaiso guards’ final game at the Athletics-Recreation Center, and Bechtold and Gutowski more than enjoyed the extra minutes.

Gutowski, an Andrean product, notched 10 points, while Bechtold, a Hebron graduate, had six assists but finished with zero points on 0-of-6 shooting. Fellow senior Mayella Kuikhoven added four points and four rebounds.

“I can’t believe this time’s already here. I’m just amazed how fast it’s come, and I don’t want it to be here,” Bechtold, who received a standing ovation before and after the game, said during an extremely classy postgame speech. “I’ve poured a lot of sweat and tears into this sport, but it’s been awesome.”

Said Gutowski, who has battled the effects of knee injuries throughout her college career: “I just want to thank (VU) for the opportunity to play college basketball.”

Valpo coach Keith Freeman said of Kuikhoven: “Mayella is a true talent, a great person, and I’m glad she came to Valpo.”

Juniors Betsy Rietema and Tamra Braun combined for 13 points in the second extra session as the Crusaders (15-9, 9-4 Mid-Continent Conference) moved into a tie for second with IUPUI with three conference games remaining. Valpo travels to IUPUI on Monday.

The Crusaders were behind the entire second half until Braun’s layup tied it at 56-all with 29 seconds remaining. Tina Hill’s potential game-winning jumper in the final seconds missed the mark.

In the first overtime, which ended at 62-apiece, Braun tied it again on a layup, and Chicago State’s Jasmin Dixon miss an open shot from the elbow with two seconds left.

Gary native and Calumet grad Chandra Timberlake scored 10 for the Cougars (11-13, 6-8), while Hill had a game-high 25.

Rietema had a team-high 21 points, while Braun tallied 20. Carrie Myers scored 12, all on 3-pointers.

The Crusaders also went to double OT at Bradley on Nov. 21, losing 79-71.
