MEN’S BASKETBALL: Crusaders shine again in easy win--The Post-Tribune

Feb. 5, 2006

By Justin Breen / Post-Tribune deputy sports editor

VALPARAISO — It looks as if Valparaiso is starting to get back on track.

The Crusaders looked in peak form for a good portion of Saturday’s 76-64 victory over Southern Utah at the Athletics-Recreation Center.

Valpo (13-8, 6-5 Mid-Continent Conference) passed the Thunderbirds (7-16, 5-5) for fourth place in the conference standings with five games remaining. The Crusaders also gained revenge on SUU, which beat VU 73-61 on Jan. 21.

The Crusaders improved to 9-0 at the ARC against the Thunderbirds behind the collective efforts of seniors Dan Oppland (team-high 20 points), Ron Howard (13 points, career-high tying 10 rebounds), Ali Berdiel (13 points, four assists) and Seth Colclasure (10 points).

“It was just a good team effort,” Valpo coach Homer Drew said.

Howard was particularly effective with a nice blend of enthusiasm and effort. He shot 5-of-10 and attacked the basket at will against the slower Thunderbirds.

“I just want to do whatever I can to help the team,” Howard said. “We’re getting there. We thought we were on track before, but we fell off. We need to get better in practice every day and play every game like we have something to prove.”

In front of a higher-energy crowd than Thursday’s win over Centenary, Valpo claimed its second straight victory. The Thunderbirds lost for the first time in five attempts.

Oppland passed Raitis Grafs (1,621) for fourth place all-time in Crusaders history. Lubos Barton (1,675) is next on the list, while Tracy Gibson (1,785) is within Oppland’s reach as well. Oppland also pulled down his 700th career rebound early in the second half.

Valpo did not trail after taking a 9-6 lead. Southern Utah trailed 34-28 at halftime, but the Crusaders’ advantage was never in doubt in the final 20 minutes.

“I thought the guys really responded in the second half,” Drew said. “I was really pleased to see us finish strong.”

Notes: Mid-Continent Conference commissioner Tom Douple said via e-mail on Thursday that he’s “pleased” Valparaiso will host Niagara in the ESPN BracketBusters tournament on Feb. 18. Douple said Valpo has a strong alumni group in western New York.

“This will give Valpo a chance to have a different set of alums to see their team in action,” Douple said. “This game also allows Valpo — both as a school and basketball program — to gain exposure in a region that it does not normally compete in.”

The BracketBusters matchups were chosen by a committee of conference commissioners, VU director of athletics Mark LaBarbera said. As part of the BracketBusters agreement, Valpo will play at Niagara next season. ...

Drew said Jimmie Miles will visit doctors Monday to determine a viral infection that has forced him to miss most of this year’s games.

Drew added that Shawn Huff will see doctors on Thursday to see how the broken bone in his left foot is healing.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Crusaders get rolling in second half to win big

Feb. 5, 2006

Post-Tribune staff report

CEDAR CITY, Utah — After holding only a slim one-point lead at halftime, the Valparaiso women rolled in the second half to a 69-54 Mid-Con victory over Southern Utah.

Valparaiso hit nine 3-pointers in the second half and 12 for the game, and it wasn’t just Carrie Myers on Saturday. She had her usual five 3-pointers for her 15 points, but others got into the act.

Andrean grad Jamie Gutowski led Valparaiso (13-8, 7-3) with six threes on her way to 20 points.

Though it was as close as it could get at the break, coach Keith Freeman thought it could have been better for VU if not for a few mental lapses on defense.

“We played pretty good defense most of the game, but we gave up some things in the last two or three seconds of some possessions in the first half,” he said.

“If we do those things right, we have a seven or eight point lead. We moved the ball a little better, exerted our will more and hit some threes in the second half.”

Betsy Rietema added 14 for the Crusaders, 10 in the second half, while Tamra Braun grabbed 10 rebounds. Cassie Hahl led Southern Utah (8-13, 1-9) with 16 points, 14 in the second half.

VU will return home Monday to face Centenary at 7:05 p.m. at the ARC.
