No rest for trip-weary Valparaiso women--The Post-Tribune

No-Doz, Vivarin or any beverage with plenty of caffeine it in would definitely be on the itinerary for the Valparaiso University women’s basketball team today.

After defeating Southern Utah late Saturday night, the Crusaders weren’t expected to arrive back in town until around 6 p.m. Sunday night, with a late practice on the docket for coach Keith Freeman’s squad.

Most of the players will have no time to rest today with classes before facing an improving Centenary squad at 7:05 p.m. today.

On the opposite end of the rest and relaxation spectrum, the Ladies arrived from Shreveport early today with no classes today with a practice somewhere in the mix.

Besides the lack of rest, VU will have to deal with a team that almost beat conference leader Western Illinois on Saturday before losing by four after a shot-clock violation with 15 seconds left.

“Monday’s a big game for us with 20 hours of travel over three time zones and not much time to practice,” Freeman said after Saturday’s victory, the Crusaders second straight. “Our kids are really going to have to fight through this.”

Even though VU made short work of Centenary earlier this season in a 66-47 victory in Shreveport, Freeman knows nothing comes easy for his team.

“There are no gimmes in this league,” he said. “(Centenary) showed that (on Saturday) by losing by only four to Western. They are a tough team.”

A victory could be the start of good things to come for the Crusaders.

VU sits only one game behind Western Illinois and IUPUI in the Mid-Con standings with those two squads on the schedule in the near future.

The Crusaders play Western at the ARC on Saturday and face IUPUI in Indianapolis two weeks from today with a tough Chicago State team in between.
