Hypothetically speaking, what would you do?--The Post-Tribune

It's the middle of the winter doldrums, so let's give our brains a little exercise here, shall we? Put down your Sudokus and wrap your brain around these hypotheticals.

What would you do?
...
n You're Homer Drew. It's mid-February. Valparaiso has been maddeningly inconsistent, but the flashes of brilliance are enough to convince you that the relatively undaunting conference tournament can be won with just a little help.

Suddenly, help is available. The NCAA finally grants freshman Paul Guede -- the jewel of this year's recruiting class -- eligibility. You have a talented player who can run the point or play small forward. It might be wishful thinking, but he might be the difference-maker.

What do you do?

Here's what should happen: Resist temptation to play him and redshirt him instead. It's too late in the season to make it worth it. It'd be a waste to squander a year of eligibility on less than a month's worth of play. He's only a freshman -- he might help, but he's not game-tested and might wind up spending 35 minutes a game on the bench. At this point, it's just not worth it.

Here's what would happen: If VU is well above .500 in conference play, the temptation could be too great. Guede gets in. Helps. But it's too much to ask of a freshman in his first real college action to be the difference-maker. The tournament berth still hinges on the likes of Brandon McPherson, Shawn Huff, Jake Diebler, Moussa Mbaye and Urule Igbavboa. Now Guede's got just three years left.
