MEN’S BASKETBALL: Crusaders see big lead fade, but then regroup--The Post-Tribune

Feb. 17, 2006

By Neal Boyer / Post-Tribune correspondent

VALPARAISO — Nothing comes easy for Valparaiso these days.

A 12-point lead, thanks to 11 straight points by senior Ron Howard, dwindled to two Thursday before the Crusaders held on to escape Chicago State 70-64.

Howard (13 points, 3 assists) got just enough help from fellow seniors Dan Oppland (22 points, eight rebounds) and Seth Colclasure (15 points) who hit 4-of-7 from the arc to snap his 1-15 slump.

Valpo (15-9, 8-6 Mid-Continent Conference) won it at the foul line, sinking 23-of-28 to just 6-of-12 by the smaller, quicker Cougars. “It was nice to see us shoot 82 percent at the line,” coach Homer Drew said.

It was 33-all at the half during which VU made 10 turnovers. “We were fortunate to be in the game the first half,” said Drew. “We weren’t playing near our abilities.”

Howard’s only two points of the half came in the final 43 seconds. But he dueled Cougar David Holston in the second half. Holston scored 16 straight, all his points, while Howard countered with 11 including a big 3-pointer and a high-flying tip-in.

“Ron gave us a spark and momentum,” said Drew. “Our team needs to be more consistent and to rebound much better, like in the second half tonight.”

Valpo grabbed 24 boards after intermission, including nine of Mohamed Kone’s game-high 13. He added eight points and two blocks.

Drew cited three key plays in the last half. First senior Ali Berdiel’s running backflip assist from 5-6 feet out of bounds for a Colclasure layin. Colclasure then popped a trey, capping a 15-4 run, for a 48-37 edge.

With 32 seconds left Teran Lee’s three-point play got CSU within 66-64, 20 seconds after he missed a pair at the line.

Big play No. 2: with 19 seconds left Oppland rebounded Berdiel’s missed free throw and was fouled. He hit both for a 4-point lead.

Royce Parran (13 points) then missing a driving shot. Big play No. 3: Jimmie Miles rebounded and was fouled, hitting two for the final score keeping the Cougars winless in the ARC at 0-12.

Miles has missed much of the second half of the season with a virus and migraines but came in late when Howard took an elbow in the head.

“Jimmie hasn’t played much. But he handled the press with Ron out and ripped down that last rebound,” said Drew.

He wasn’t happy with 17 turnovers to just nine by CSU. But Valpo’s 28 points in the paint to CSU’s 16 helped.

Oppland moved into third in VU career points at 1682, passing Lubos Barton.

Chicago State (6-18, 5-8) had won its last two vs. Valpo, in the Mid-Con tourney opener last season and 90-76 in Chicago Jan. 19 when five Cougars hit double digits.

Miles said there’s a reason Valpo outshot CSU from the field, 44 to 36.2 percent. “All week we came in at 11 a.m. and took about 500 shots each. It helped Seth.”

Drew said Valpo still has a slim shot at the tourney’s third seed.

Valpo’s final home game is Saturday at 7:05 p.m. when Niagara visits on Senior Night. VU’s five seniors each will speak after the game.
