Oakland U. suffers worst Mid-Con loss--The Oakland Press

By DUSTIN FRUCCI Special to The Oakland Press

ROCHESTER — One team was golden, the other wasn’t even close.
Oral Roberts’ Golden Eagles strolled into the Oakland Athletics Center on Thursday night and handed Oakland University’s Golden Grizzlies their worst loss ever in the Mid-Continent Conference, a 90-53 thrashing.
Oral Roberts made 18 shots from 3-point range, with most of the damage coming from Chris Riouse, who set a school record with 10 3-pointers. Riouse finished with a careerhigh 32 points.
“We came in trying to see if we could stop (Caleb) Green,” OU head coach Greg Kampe said, referring to the reigning Mid-Con Player of the Year. “We didn’t think we could stop him with man-to-man, so we went with the zone. They made their shots.”
As OU defenders closed on Oral Roberts’ big man, Riouse and Larry Owens made them pay from the 3-point line. Owens made four 3-pointers and finished just one point off his career high with 20 points.
Making things worse for Oakland (9-15, 4-8) was the early foul trouble for Calvin Wooten. Wooten picked up his third foul with 8:26 left in the first half. He checked back in the game for one last offensive possession, but was called for charging just nine seconds before halftime.
“I had to find out if he can play with three fouls,” Kampe said. “If we’re in the (Mid-Con) tournament and he gets three early fouls, I need to know how he’s going to react.”
At halftime, Oral Roberts (15-9, 10-2) led 40-18. The game would never get closer.
OU shot just 27 percent from the field and had only four more field goals (22) than Oral Roberts had 3-pointers (18).
Green finished with 10 points and eight rebounds for Oral Roberts.
Wooten finished with 12 points to lead OU. Vova Severovas added nine points and nine rebounds.
Rick Billings, who was starting to become one of OU’s most consistent players, didn’t start the game and didn’t enter until the 10:11 mark of the first half, when OU was already down by double figures. Kampe said Billings showed up late and it affected how the team approached the game, so he sat.
OU hosts Missouri-Kansas City on Saturday and needs to win to prevent suffering its first losing season at home since it joined Division I.
“This is embarrassing, but we have to keep our heads up,” Wooten said. “I know some of the young guys are down, but I’ll be on them.”

MEN’S BASKETBALL: IUPUI runs by Valpo--The Post-Tribune

Feb. 10, 2006

By Justin Breen / Post-Tribune deputy sports editor

INDIANAPOLIS — This is a big, big week for IUPUI.

The Jaguars faced Valparaiso, the kings of the Mid-Continent Conference, on Thursday, and they will play the preseason conference favorites, Oral Roberts, on Saturday.

Their 75-67 victory over the Crusaders before 2,000 fans — including Indiana Pacers Jermaine O’Neal and Stephen Jackson, and the NCAA’s Myles Brand — at a packed and airplane-jet loud “The Jungle” was another statement in their stellar season in the Mid-Con. They also ended an 0-for-7 streak against the Crusaders in Indianapolis.

With the victory, IUPUI (16-7, 11-1) won its seventh straight game and stayed one game in front of the Golden Eagles (15-9, 10-2), who obliterated Oakland 90-53.

“One thing I learned from (Valpo coach) Homer Drew is in their glory days, all they cared about was winning a conference championship,” IUPUI coach Ron Hunter said. “That’s all we care about.”

Valpo (13-9, 6-6) was eliminated from contention for the Mid-Con’s regular-season title, losing its fourth straight road game in the process.

“It’s very tough,” said senior Ron Howard, who had a team-best 22 points with four assists. “We played an OK game, but we have to play a little better.”

Valpo, which blew a 22-point, second-half lead to IUPUI on Jan. 28 in the teams’ first meeting this season, had no answer for George Hill, who scored a game-high 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting. Brandon Cole had 21 points, including four 3-pointers.

“IUPUI earned it,” Drew said. “We knew at our place they were not a fluke.”

For the Crusaders, Ali Berdiel had 15 points, while Mohamed Kone tallied 14 points with seven rebounds.

Dan Oppland scored only eight points before fouling out with 40.7 seconds remaining, snapping a 28-game double-figure scoring streak. The last time Oppland failed to score at least 10 points was when he had eight on Feb. 12, 2005, against IUPUI.

Backup center Moussa Mbaye did not play due to a minor groin injury.

The injury forced Drew to play freshman Urule Igbavboa as a replacement for Kone, who picked up three fouls in the first half.

Hill finished an electric first half — which had 10 lead changes — with a last-second putback to give the hosts a 37-32 edge.

The Jaguars opened the second half with a 6-0 run, and the Crusaders never came within three points the rest of the way.

“Our team just came out and played hard,” said Hill, whose Jaguars improved to 10-1 at home. “We said this year that no one comes to our house and beats us.”

Notes

Before Thursday, West Side graduate Brandon Cameron was averaging 5.4 ppg and 2.2 apg for the Jaguars. Cameron wore the jersey of teammate Troy Shanks after an incident before tipoff. ... Several members of the VU women’s team and former Crusader Greg Tonagel attended the game. ... Valpo guard Jimmie Miles, who had been battling the effects of a viral infection, dressed but did not play. ... Oppland, who had a game-high 12 rebounds, moved into fourth place on VU’s all-time list with 714. ... Drew said guard Shawn Huff had his left foot X-rayed on Thursday, and he’s hoping to have the sophomore guard ready for the conference tournament.
