Western Illinois women

KANSAS CITY, MO. - The starters carried Western Illinois to a 68-54 win over Missouri-Kansas City.

"It is a great feeling to win this game," WIU coach Leslie Crane said. "We were able to defeat them on the boards and when you beat a good team like UMKC on the boards, it is a good thing."

Western held a 43-33 edge on the glass. Richwoods graduate Stephanie Lovingood grabbed 15 rebounds for the Westerwinds, one shy of a career high.

"When our guards get as many rebounds as they did (14) ,you are going to win games because they are running shots down," Crane said. "We learned in the first semester that if we were able to rebound with teams, you stay in the ball game and control the tempo."

Only one of the Westerwinds' points came from the bench, a free throw by Katy Clark.

The rest came from the WIU starters including a game-high 17 by Katy Davenport. Amanda Walker and Gina Hugelier scored 16 each.

Four of Walker's five field goals came from 3-point range.

"Amanda had the time that she needs to feel comfortable shooting the ball from beyond the arc because our guards did a good job of running the weave play and setting the screen in the second half," Crane said.

Western Illinois men

KANSAS CITY, MO. - Western Illinois snapped a 16-game losing streak to Missouri-Kansas City with a 69-62 win.

David Jackson and David DuBois each recorded a double-double for the Leathernecks.

Jackson led the Leathernecks with 16 points while DuBois added 10. Each player had 10 rebounds.

Jerryck Owens-Murray added 14 points for Western, which hadn't beaten UMKC since an 80-56 win on Jan. 28, 1999.
