Snikkers earns Player of the Year; DCDS’ Moore nabs all-state
MONROE (AP) — Scott Soodsma says he was in the right place at the right time.
He took over the Hudsonville Unity Christian girls basketball program in 2003, the same year Carrie Snikkers was a freshman.
Four years and 75 victories later, Soodsma has put together an impressive coaching resume.
One of the main reasons is Snikkers, who has been selected as the player of the year on the Associated Press Class B all-state team.
Snikkers, a Miss Basketball runner-up, has signed to play at Oakland.
“It’s all about timing. I knew when to get into coaching the girls,” Soodsma said with a laugh.
One of his first coaching decisions was to write Snikkers’ name in the starting lineup.
“She started in her very first game as a freshman. We knew she was going to be good,” he said.
Even though she is 6-foot-2, Snikkers was polished even in that first season.
“She was never gangly. She helped kick off the program and get us going,” Soodsma said.
Unity Christian has improved each season, going 14-8, 15-7 and 23-4. This year’s team is 24-1, including a 60-18 win over Stevensville Lakeshore in the state quarterfi nals Tuesday night. Last year’s Unity Christian team reached the state championship game.
Snikkers, who averaged 19.4 points and 9.2 rebounds this season, can score well inside or hit the 3-pointer. She has connected 23 times from outside the arc.
“Obviously, we don’t want her out there all the time, but she has the ability to go inside or outside. That’s unusual for someone her height,” Soodsma said. “She can play the high or low post and is a great passer. She could play a 3, 4 or 5 in college.”
She was a unanimous choice on the all-state team, which was selected by a panel of sports writers from around the state. Also landing every vote were Kellie Watson of Ionia, Simone Trice of Flint Northwestern and Amber Moore of Detroit County Day.
Watson was hampered by a shoulder injury this season. The junior is right-handed and tried to play left-handed after the injury. In 14 games before she was hurt, Watson averaged 23.9 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.5 blocks.
Trice made the AP Class C all-state team as a sophomore and junior before Flint Northwestern moved up to Class B this year. She has signed with Georgia Tech and had a 35-point game while averaging a double-double in points (19.4) and rebounds (13.9).
Moore is just a sophomore, but she already has established a solid reputation at Country Day, a perennial state title contender.
The all-state list also includes Katy Stuppy of Dowagiac, Sherryia Armstrong of Muskegon Heights, Cheritee Green of Wyoming Park, Stacey Farrell of St. Clair, Kortni Elsworth of Goodrich and Dominique Dixon of Detroit Renaissance.
Stuppy stands just 5-3 but had four games where she
scored 30 or more points.
Armstrong, who has signed with Central Michigan, averaged 17.9. Green supplied 16 points and 12 rebounds a game. Farrell helped St. Clair to a 92-7 record during her four years and, like Snikkers, will continue her career at Oakland. Elsworth broke Goodrich’s school record with 36 points in a game and accomplished it against stateranked Flint Hamady. Dixon is a junior who made 41 percent of her 3-point attempts and 76 percent of her free throws.

CINCINNATI (AP) — John Williamson scored 27 points as Cincinnati held off Oakland 68-61 on Wednesday night.
Freshman Deonta Vaughn added 17 points, with 14 coming in the second half to help the Bearcats (5-1) overcome a 33-29 halftime deficit.
Earlier this season, Oakland led another Big East team, No. 4 Pittsburgh, by the same halftime score before losing to the Panthers 66-55.
In Wednesday’s game, Shawn Hopes led Oakland (4-4) with 17 points and Johnathon Jones added 14.
Williamson also had nine rebounds and three assists.
