Piggott wins Mid-Con Player of the Week--The Oakland Press

Oakland senior Nicole Piggott (Pewamo, Mich.) became the second consecutive Golden Grizzly to be named the Mid-Continent Conference’s women’s basketball Player of the Week.
Piggott averaged 21.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week for Oakland. She recorded 19 points and six rebounds to help lead OU to a 68-62 upset at Eastern Michigan last Wednesday. The 5’11” forward followed that performance with 24 points and six rebounds in a 69-57 loss at Central Michigan Sunday.
Piggott currently leads the Golden Grizzlies in scoring (16.8 points per game) and rebounding (7.0 average). She is among the league leaders in several categories, including scoring (second), rebounding (fourth) and assists, averaging 3.20 (sixth).
This is the fifth time in Piggott’s career she has been tabbed player of the week. Piggott follows freshman Hanna Reising as the second straight OU player to win.

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) — Dominic James hit a 3-pointer with 3 seconds left and scored the final 18 points for No. 8 Marquette in a 65-62 win over Valparaiso on Monday night.
James made a 3-pointer with 37 seconds left that gave Marquette (7-0) a 62-59 lead. But Jarryd Loyd answered with a 3 over James with 21 seconds remaining to tie it. James then hit the winner from the top of the key to fi nish with 22 points.
Valparaiso had one last chance, but Brandon McPherson’s 35-footer at the buzzer bounced off the left side of the rim. The Crusaders (3-2) have lost 17 straight games to ranked teams since making it to the round of 16 in the 1998 NCAA tournament.
Wesley Matthews added 11 points and Jerel McNeal had 10 for Marquette.
Shawn Huff led Valparaiso with 22 points.

Drew Neitzel knew that a 40-13 first half was as good as Michigan State could play. He also knew that the game has two halves.

Despite Neitzel's 21 points and a 32-6 blitz before halftime, the Spartans' 71-53 win over Oakland on Saturday was half magical and half maddening.

"You can't really ask for a better first half than we had," Neitzel said. "But we talked about putting two halves together. Coach made a point of that in the locker room at halftime. It didn't happen."

Instead, it ruined Tom Izzo's day and left him wondering about the character of his team heading into an ACC-Big Ten Challenge matchup at Boston College on Wednesday.

"I should feel really good about the first half," Izzo said. "That was some of our best basketball in the last two years. But basketball isn't a game of halves. We talked for two days about playing the full 40 minutes and playing the game, not the score."

After scoring 30 against Vermont on Tuesday, Neitzel was 8-for-15 from the field and had seven assists for the Spartans (6-1), who shot 59.3 percent before halftime and held the Golden Grizzlies to 22.2 percent accuracy.

Marquise Gray had his first career double-double and registered career highs with 14 points and 12 rebounds, Goran Suton added 12 points, and Travis Walton matched his high output with 11.

"I just finally decided to go back to my old high school days and start dunking everything again," Gray said, recalling a seven-month layoff with two right-foot fractures. "We lost the Maryland game by two, and I had six or seven chances to finish. I've got a lot more to give. But this was a start."

Vova Severovas led Oakland (4-3) with 13 points and six rebounds. Derick Nelson, a Lansing native, had 12 points in his homecoming, while Johnathon Jones of nearby Okemos had nine, all in the second half. That wasn't enough to satisfy Grizzlies coach Greg Kampe.

"We stunk," Kampe said. "We absolutely stunk. They took the first opportunity away, and no one wanted to make a play. I blame us. We were a very poorly coached team. We were awful."

Oakland looked nothing like the team that led No. 4 Pittsburgh by four at halftime of a nine-point loss or like a 14-point winner at Duquesne. But Izzo was every bit as unhappy with his team and himself.

"I haven't done a very good job," Izzo said of producing two halves of effort. "I've tried sitting, kissing and hugging. But if you sign up to come here, you're going to respect the game and be held accountable."

Michigan State led 8-7 when it found the range and denied any decent opportunities with snug defense. A 22-10 rebound advantage in the first 20 minutes added to the cushion.

The Grizzlies trimmed a 27-point deficit to 15 early in the second half, only to see the margin grow again until the closing minutes.

The Spartans finished with edges of 43-28 in rebounds and 19-5 in assists, as Oakland showed the effects of a rugged road swing. The Grizzlies are approaching the middle of a 12-game stretch that has them playing away from home 11 times.

"We felt we were going to win," Kampe said. "We really did. Michigan State is one of the premier programs in the country, and Tom is one of the best coaches ever. But we thought we could play with them. I'm really angry about it."

Oakland freshman Hanna Reising (Peoria, Ill.) was named the Mid-Continent Conference women’s basketball Player of the Week. The honor comes on the heels of two consecutive 20-plus point performances by the Golden Grizzlies rookie.
Reising tallied 25 points to lead all players in a 90-68 OU loss at UW-Green Bay last Wednesday and followed that performance with 23 points to lead the Golden Grizzlies in a 74-69 loss to Florida State on Sunday. She drained seven 3-pointers against the Seminoles to account for 21 of her 23 points.
Reising leads the Mid-Con in several categories, including scoring (20.7), field goal percentage (.759) and 3-point field goals made (14 total, 4.67 average).

PITTSBURGH — Playing in Pittsburgh for the fourth time in six days, Oakland’s men’s basketball team used a stout defensive effort and the inside game of Shawn Hopes to grind out a 67-53 win Wednesday night over Duquesne.
Vova Severovas led all players with 22 points, with Hopes adding 20 to lead Oakland to the victory.
Erik Kangas hit a pair of 3-point shots in a minute and a half span that pushed Oakland into a 24-16 lead late in the first half. With the Golden Grizzlies defense putting the clamps on Duquesne, Oakland closed out the half with six more points, pulling out to a 30-16 halftime lead on a pair of free throws by Hopes with 31 seconds left and completing a 12-point half. Duquesne’s 16 points in the half were the fewest allowed by Oakland this season
Duquesne opened the second half with a 5-2 spurt that cut the OU lead to 11 points, but Hopes put in six points in the first four minutes to keep the Oakland lead intact.
Kangas finished with 12 points on four 3-pointers, while Johnathon Jones added 10 points and five assists for the Golden Grizzlies.
Oakland is back in action Saturday at Michigan State.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Every Pittsburgh opponent understands it must neutralize 7-footer Aaron Gray to have any chance of beating the Panthers. The problem is finding a way to do so, and no Pitt opponent has come close to accomplishing it yet.
Gray had 23 points and 13 rebounds and No. 4 Pittsburgh survived an early scare, rallying for a 66-55 win over Oakland on Sunday.
Gray played less than half of Pitt’s 85-68 decision Saturday over UMass because of a cut lip and foul problems, but he was too strong and effective around the basket for Oakland (3-2) to handle in playing all but six minutes.
Gray had 15 points in the second half as Pitt came back after trailing 33-29 at the half.
“Aaron had to play only 17 minutes (Saturday), so maybe that helped him,” coach Jamie Dixon said. “We were able to execute four straight baskets to him in the second half, all on different plays.”
The Panthers (5-0) won their first four games by an average of nearly 20 points but were pushed for the first time this season by Oakland, which returned four of its five starters from last season. Both teams were playing their third game in three days in the Colonial Athletic Association Classic.
“We were a little fatigued, and maybe we weren’t expecting them to come out quite as hard or to be as good as they were,” said Levon Kendall, who had 11 points and nine rebounds. “We came out flat in the first half and they were beating us to loose balls and playing harder than us.”
With the 6-8 Shawn Hopes controlling Gray early, the Grizzlies — picked fifth in the Mid-Continent Conference preseason coaches poll —opened a 25-15 lead in the first half and led 33-29 at the half.
But Pitt’s depth and strong inside play began wearing down the Grizzlies early in the second half, when Gray quickly took over by scoring six points in less than two minutes and 10 in slightly more than five minutes.
“That’s always one of our main emphases, to get the ball down low,” Gray said. “They were doubling me a lot in the first half and even in the second half, but coach Dixon has confidence in me to make good decisions and I got a few easy baskets. I started to really get confident and things worked out well for us.”
Pitt’s Mike Cook tied it at 39 with a short jumper five minutes into the half. Not long after that, Pitt went on a decisive 13-2 run keyed by Levance Fields’ 3-pointer, Gray’s layup and Kendall’s three-point play to take a 57-45 lead.
“We’re disappointed,” Oakland coach Greg Kampe said. “We had a chance to beat the No. (4) team in the country. We wanted to keep our defense at the same level it was in the first half, hang in there and hang in there and steal one on the road. ... But we came out and gave up four easy baskets in a row to start the half, and we didn’t give up one of those in the first half.”
Oakland went 1-2 in Pittsburgh, beating Northeastern but losing to Pitt and Massachusetts. Vova Severovas led Oakland with 17 points, with Erik Kangas adding 11 and Hopes 10.
The Colonial Classic tournament wraps up Friday when Pitt hosts Florida State, which also won its three on-campus games in the exempt tournament.
Dixon welcomed the chance to play so many games in little time — it was his team’s fifth game in eight days — to give his younger players an idea of how to handle the back-to-back games required in the Big East tournament in March.
“It’s great preparation for later down the road,” said Gray, chosen as the tournament MVP after scoring 61 points in the three games. “We took a few steps forward this weekend, but we realized we still have to work on some things.”
Pitt is 41-1 against nonconference opponents since the Petersen Events Center opened in 2002 and have won 62 of their last 63 games against non-Big East teams.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Oakland women’s basketball fell to host Florida State, 74-69, in a non-conference game at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center Sunday.
The Golden Grizzlies overcame a nine-point fi rst half deficit to gain a 36-30 halftime lead, but were unable to hold on for the victory.
Freshman Hanna Reising hit seven 3-pointers and totaled 23 points to lead OU, while senior Nicole Piggott and sophomore Jessica Pike registered double digits with 15 and 12, respectively.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — James Life didn’t miss a shot in scoring all 15 of his points in the first half and Massachusetts built leads of as many as 16 points before halftime in beating Oakland 65-56 on Friday.
Gary Forbes also scored 15 points for Massachusetts, with Stephane Lasme getting 11 points and 14 rebounds — or nine more rebounds than any Oakland player. Rashaun Freeman added 11 points.
Life was 6-of-6 in the first half, with three 3-pointers, as the Minutemen (2-0) surged to a 20-8 lead seven minutes into the game and were not pushed by Oakland (2-1) after that in the round-robin game of the Colonial Athletic Association Classic. Life missed both of his shots in the second half.
Oakland trailed by as many as 22 points at 51-29 midway though the second half, and got to within nine points in the fi nal minute only by going on an 11-0 run.
Shawn Hopes scored 17 points, Brandon Cassise had 13 and Derick Nelson scored 10 for Oakland, which plays Northeastern on Saturday.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Southern Utah's Steve Barnes has been named the Mid-Continent Conference's Men's Basketball Player of the Week for his performance in last Friday's 76-73 win at Utah. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Marchello Vealy hit his first seven 3-point shots and Oral Roberts stunned No. 3 Kansas, 78-71, Wednesday night.
Vealy, only 1-for-13 in 3-pointers last year as a freshman, was 7-for-8 from behind the arc and finished with 22 points.
Caleb Green added 20 points for the Golden Eagles (1-1), who outplayed the heavily favored Jayhawks from start to finish.
Kansas (1-1) cut its defi cit to 72-69 on Russell Robinson’s free throw with just over one minute left in the game.
But Ken Tutt made Oral Roberts’ 11th 3-pointer for a 75-69 lead and added two free throws with 25 seconds to go. Tutt finished with 12 points.
Kansas trailed by as many as eight points in the second half and never got closer than three. The Jayhawks got 22 points from freshman Darrell Arthur, but were only 11-for-21 from the foul line and consistently missed easy shots.
Julian Wright, a preseason favorite for Big 12 player of the year, blew layups on two consecutive possessions as Kansas tried to take the lead in the second half.

MILWAUKEE — Freshman Hanna Reising came off the bench to score 25 points for the Oakland University women’s basketball team.
Unfortunately for the Golden Grizzlies, it still wasn’t enough for a victory.
Kayla Groh and Nicole Soulis each had double-doubles to lead Wisconsin-Green Bay to a 90-68 win over OU in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday.
Just two days after scoring 107 points, OU shot 40 percent from the field.
OU (1-1) senior Nicole Piggott had nine points, nine rebounds and three assists against the Horizon League’s preseason favorite.
Sophomore Jessica Pike hit a jumper with 10:48 left in the game to pull OU within 60-52, but Green Bay responded with a 21-0 run to seal the victory.

OU signs five
Prep standout Carrie Snikkers committed to OU’s basketball program Wednesday morning to begin competing in the 2007-08 season.
Snikkers signed a national letter of intent to join Brittany Carnage (St. Clair), Stacey Farrell (New Haven), Anna Patritto (Howell) and Kirstie Molone (Brighton) for the upcoming recruiting class.
“We’re very excited about this year’s recruits,” OU coach Beckie Francis said. “These players are quality individuals both on and off the court and we think we’ve put together the right mix to fill our needs. All five of these women come from top-caliber high school and AAU programs.”
The 6-foot-4 Snikkers, a candidate Miss Basketball candidate, has helped Hudsonville Unity Christian to a 19-1 record.
Patritto, a four-time all-conference player, will stay in the area after she graduates from Howell High. She was picked as the Kensington Valley Conference MVP this season.
