Oakland (19-14, 10-4): Coach Greg Kampe promises a more up-tempo style. Sophomore PG Johnathon Jones is the key to the fast break. Juniors Derick Nelson, a wing player, and Erik Kangas, the team's top perimeter shooter, are counted on to have big seasons.

League: IUPUI returns three preseason all-conference players -- first-teamers George Hill and Austin Montgomery and second-team selection Gary Patterson.

NCAA Division I outlooks: IPFW--The Indy Star

2006-07 record: 12-17 (independent).
Indy connections: None.
What's to like: The Mastodons continue improving under former Indiana University standout Dane Fife. Winners of just seven games before Fife arrived, IPFW won 10 games two seasons ago and 12 last season. IPFW has a conference (Summit League) for the first time as a Division I program. Leading scorer DeWitt Scott leads three returning starters.
What's not to like: Fife loses three key players, including versatile 6-9 Tyler Best. The nonconference schedule is brutal with games at Wisconsin, Nebraska, Michigan State and Marquette. On the other hand, that could help prepare the Mastodons for the Summit League.
Did you know? In his third season, Fife, 28, remains the youngest Division I head coach in the nation.

Sophomore Allyssa DeHaan has recovered from an ankle injury and will be the only returning starter now that Aisha Jefferson is out for the season with a knee injury. Mia Johnson is also recovering from a knee injury and is not expected to return until Big Ten play begins.
