COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The wait was worth it for No. 3 Ohio State and prized big man Greg Oden. In his first competition in seven months, the 7-foot freshman, touted by some as the best U.S.-born big man in a generation, had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Buckeyes past Valparaiso 78-58 on Saturday.
Oden had not played summer ball or with the Buckeyes since undergoing surgery June 16 to repair a torn ligament in his right wrist.
Daequan Cook scored 20 points and Ron Lewis had 10 for Ohio State (7-1), coming off a 98-89 loss at No. 7 North Carolina on Wednesday night. Mike Conley Jr., Oden’s teammate at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, added seven points and seven assists.
Samuel Haanpaa had 18 points, Brandon McPherson 11 and Urule Igbavboa 10 for Valparaiso (3-4), which lost its fourth in a row.
One of the highlights for Oden came with 6 1/2 minutes left. Ducking behind a teammate and then leaping high, he swatted Moussa Mbaye’s shot back at him. When McPherson got the rebound and drove the lane, Oden blocked that, too, prompting the crowd of 17,311 to shower him with a second standing ovation.
He had five blocked shots in 23 minutes.

Kangas’ four 3-pointers leads Oakland to victory--The Oakland Press

ROCHESTER —Putting together two winning halves of basketball against highercaliber teams has been a challenge for Oakland University.
Things changed on Saturday.
Despite Wiconsin-Milwaukee’s second-half surge that erased a doubledigit differential, the Golden Grizzlies persevered and held on for a 76-70 non-conference win at the Oakland Athletics Center.
The Grizzlies entertained a crowded house and wowed the cable TV viewers at home while improving to 5-4 on the season.
The Grizzlies survived a scare against a team that’s won three straight Horizon League titles and has made two straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
OU snapped a six-game losing skid against Milwaukee in the series that dates back to 1969. Not a bad way to re-establish yourself at home after being out on the road since Nov. 12.
“Our goal this year is to be able to protect our home court and we were able to do that and get a big win,” OU sophomore guard Erik Kangas said.
Rick Billings hit a 3-pointer to spark a 5-0 run that gave the Grizzlies a a game-best 14-point advantage.
The Panthers (2-7) were determined to try to win their first road game of the season.
Junior Avery Smith sank a 3-pointer with 12 minutes left in the game to cap Milwaukee’s 12-0 run to pull within 44-42.
Smith came up in the clutch again with just under 10 minutes left when he hit a bomb of a 3-pointer to knot the game at 51 each.
Kangas responded on the next possession with a 3-pointer of his own to quickly give OU back the lead.
The two teams battled nipand-tuck down the stretch for the duration.
The feisty Smith singlehandedly kept Milwaukee in the game with his sharp shooting.
Smith came of the bench to shoot 6-for-10 from behind the arc in the second half en route to a career-best 36 points.
“He must have been feeling it big time tonight,” Kangas said. “He was making some shots that seemed like they had no chance of going in. He came ready to play tonight.”
The respect was mutual.
Kangas shot 4-for-6 from 3-point range for the day to finish with a team-leading 18 points and two steals. Kangas nailed a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left in the first half to help OU take a comfortable 38-28 into the locker room at halftime.
“Kangas did a great job,” Milwaukee coach Rob Jeter said. “I think he was the biggest difference, even though we were undersized in the middle.”
OU shot just 7-for-25 from the field in the second half, but it didn’t matter in the end. The Grizzlies made 3-pointers when they counted and they made 20 of 26 shots from the foul line in the second half to seal the victory.
“That’s a very good win for Oakland,” long-time OU coach Greg Kampe said. “The way we did it, I think, was good for me because we really went though that bad spell in the second half where we couldn’t make a shot and they had a kid who had a career night — and it wasn’t because we weren’t guarding him — and we really survived that.”
Freshman point guard Johnathon Jones hit a 3-pointer with 2:06 left in the game to give OU a 66-61 edge and bring the crowd to its feet.
The Panthers pulled no closer than four points for the remainder of the game, even though Smith sank another pair of 3-pointers in the fi nal 20 seconds.
OU senior center Shawn Hopes grabbed six rebounds and shot 4-for-5 from the field for 10 points in the fi rst half to get OU off to a solid start.
He muscled his way under the basket in traffic to put OU on the scoreboard on the game’s opening possession.
Hopes finished with 13 points and eight rebounds while being in foul trouble most of the second half.

Grizzlies roll past Rochester College--The Oakland Press

ROCHESTER — Every team deserves to get a break in a tough schedule.
The Oakland University women’s basketball team got its breather on Saturday.
The Golden Grizzlies found themselves on the positive side of a completely lopsided matchup that ended with an 85-23 final against Rochester College at the Oakland Athletics Center.
“I think it helps boost our confidence up,” OU freshman guard Melissa Jeltema said of her team’s victory. “The players who don’t get to play a lot they got to play a lot today. A lot of good things happened with everyone scoring.”
OU held Rochester to just nine points in the first half and never looked back.
Sophomore guard Jessica Pike scored 11 points to highlight OU’s 16-0 run to open the game.
The win was a nice way to nurse the wounds caused by tough losses at Florida State, Central Michigan and No. 24 Bowling Green.
“We knew going into this non-league schedule that we were going to have some big games,” OU coach Beckie Francis said. “And it gets even bigger coming up. It’s nice when you come home to hopefully have a confidence booster.”
Pike led the way with 22 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field, eight rebounds, eight assists, eight steals and just one turnover in 25 minutes of play.
“I just thought her intensity was really high and she played really smart,” Francis said of Pike.
Jeltema took advantage of her opportunity to see extended minutes. She came off the bench to score 14 points and grab eight rebounds.
Rochester (3-6) failed to make a double-digit number of field goals, as the Warriors shot just 11.7 percent from the field for the game.
Troy Athens graduate Deana Donato led the way for Rochester with 12 points and two steals.
Freshman Hanna Reising was 4-for-5 from the field to add 12 points and have six defensive rebounds, as OU snapped a two-game losing skid.
Despite enjoying a hefty lead throughout the game, OU still hustled on defense and it showed in the final box score.
OU outrebounded its opponent 53-27 and finished with 16 steals.
The Grizzlies took advantage of the fact that a fair amount of fans stayed after the men’s afternoon tipoff to see what the women had to offer.
“I told the players that it was important to play hard, to dive for loose balls and play good basketball so we can increase our attendance,” Francis said. “I would think the fans probably enjoyed how we played.”
