women's sports notes: Pat mckee--The Indy Star

IUPUI's Shann Hart was named Mid-Continent Conference Coach of the Year, while Jaguars freshman Jernisha Cann was named Sixth Woman of the Year. IUPUI senior Kia Hayes (North Central) and Valparaiso junior Tamra Braun were chosen first-team all-league, while Cann, Rietema and IUPUI senior Brooke McAfee (Valparaiso) were second-team choices. Cann and classmate Tanika Mays (Marion) were all-newcomer selections.

Three Valparaiso University women’s basketball players were named to the Mid-Con all-conference team on Wednesday with one of them earning a repeat trip to the first team.

Tamra Braun earned first-team honors for the second straight season while teammates Betsy Rietema and Carrie Myers earned second-team and honorable mention selections respectively.

Braun is 11th in the conference in scoring at 11.9 ppg and fifth in rebounds with 7.9 per game. She leads the league in shooting at 54.8 percent and has recorded six double-doubles this year.

Rietema is seventh in the Mid-Con in scoring with 13.0 ppg, which leads the Crusaders.

Myers is being honored in the Mid-Con for the first time. The junior leads the league in 3-pointers made with 2.78 per game and ranks third in 3-point percentage at 41 percent. She is averaging 11.3 ppg.

Joining the VU players on the all-conference team is a Valparaiso High School grad. IUPUI’s Brooke McAfee was selected to the second team for the second time in her career. The senior was also selected to the squad as a sophomore.

She leads the nation in blocked shots this season and owns every Mid-Con record related to blocks.
