LADY GOLDEN GRIZZLIES VS MARQUETTE

Marquette hands OU first home loss--The Oakland Press

By KELLY McDONALD Of The Oakland Press

ROCHESTER — Half-court trap. Full-court man-to-man. Saggy defense or pressure. It didn’t matter.
No. 24 Marquette coach Terri Mitchell has it all in her game plan.
Mitchell’s Golden Eagles got their coach her 200th victory with a 64-51 triumph over Oakland University Saturday afternoon at the O’Rena.
The constantly switching defenses every time down the floor gave the Grizzlies fits all night. The loss is the fi rst for Oakland on its home floor.
“We try to switch up our defense as much as possible,” said Mitchell, who is 200-110 in 11 seasons at Marquette. “(Oakland) still got some good looks and they also caused us 22 turnovers.”
After closing the gap to 34-28 on two jumpers by senior Nicole Piggott to begin the second half, Marquette’s defense forced Oakland into 0-for-12 shooting over the next seven minutes.
“They do a really nice job of switching defenses,” said Oakland head coach Beckie Francis. “It’s the first time we faced that all year.
“The fact that they’re taller affects our shots. Their guards are 6-foot-1 and 6-foot-2 and we’re not used to playing against that kind of height.”
Marquette (9-1) jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead before four straight points by Piggott got Oakand back in it.
Senior Danielle Kamm sparked a 7-2 run with an old-fashioned 3-point play for the Golden Eagles. But a timeout by Francis produced a trey by Bonnie Baker followed by a Charlese Greer (Pontiac Northern) to Melissa Jeltema layup.
“Oakland is good. We watched them on film and they have a lot of weapons,” said Mitchell. “They’re coached well. We don’t take anything for granted.”
A shot fake and drive by April Kidd cut Marquette’s lead to 21-18.
“We talked about the extra energy we needed to focus at halftime,” said Mitchell, whose team missed seven layups in the first half. “It was more of a plea than a strategy.”
The plea worked as her team responded with a 13-3 run after Piggott cut the lead to 34-28.
Greer’s reverse layup halted the field goal drought for Oakland but three turnovers on its next five possessions led to Efueko Osagie-Landry’s jumper inside and Marquette’s biggest lead of the game 53-34.
“We learned we can’t shoot ourselves in the foot,” said Francis. “When we get a good defensive stop, we can’t have the unforced turnovers. That had a lot to do with their quickness and switching defenses.”
Sophomore Jessica Pike (Clawson), Oakland’s leading scorer with 15 points, gave the Grizzlies something to build upon when she canned a halfcourt heave at the final buzzer.
“We practice that everyday,” said Francis. “We end every practice with a half-court shot contest and Pike is one of our leaders. So we told her to go for it at the end.”
Sophomore guard Krystal Ellis led Marquette with 17 points while Quaye and Kamm combined for 24 points inside where the Golden Eagles dominated Oakland 44-14. Piggott and Kidd fi nished with 10 points each for Oakland (4-5).
With West Virginia, Auburn and No. 7 Connecticut coming up on the road, Francis expects to be ready for Mid-Continent Conference play beginning Jan. 8 when OU hosts IUPUI.
“We’re playing teams that are in higher level conferences so when we get back to our conference, we’re used to strong, big and tough teams. We’re hoping it’s going to help us,” Francis said.

Second half surge leads Oakland past Toledo--The Oakland Press

By CRYSTAL EVOLA Of The Oakland Press

ROCHESTER — Motivational halftime speech? Not necessary. The Oakland University women’s basketball team had all the motivation it needed to avenge last season’s road loss to the University of Toledo. It showed. The Golden Grizzlies broke open a tied game at the half and cruised to a 76-60 win over Toledo in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday at the Oakland Athletics Center. The Grizzlies outscored Toledo 30-7 in the first 12 minutes of the second half to take control of the game for good.
“We just came out intense,” said OU senior Bonnie Baker, who had 17 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals this time around. “We were ready to go, probably more so than they were.”
There’s nothing like the fury felt from a 27-point loss the previous year.
“We had fire just from that,” Baker said. “We had some Piggott pay back to do so that alone felt good.”
OU’s seemingly can’t-miss shooting combined with a solid defensive effort in the second half buried the Rockets for the duration.
The Grizzlies turned the ball over just four times and outrebounded Toledo 22-15 in the second half.
Toledo guard Nacole Stocks lit it up with 3-for-4 shooting from behind the arc and 4-for-5 from the field en route to 11 first half points.
That’s also where her offense stopped, as OU limited Toledo to 1-for-7 shooting from 3-point range in the second half.
“Once we kind of contained them a little bit,” OU freshman Hanna Reising said, “then we got more confident in our offense.”
Reising scored eight points to highlight OU’s 18-2 run that opened up the second half.
Olivia Terry hit Toledo’s seventh and final 3-pointer of the game to cap a 9-0 run to pull within 15 with 3:46 left, but the rally attempt was too little too late.
Reising finished with 16 points and five assists and senior Nicole Piggott added 18 points and nine rebounds, just falling short of her second double-double of the season.
Charlese Greer (Pontiac Northern) led the bench players with eight points and three rebounds.
Toledo capitalized on OU’s poor shot selection in the final two minutes of the first half to close out with a 5-0 run that knotted the game at 39 each.
But it didn’t faze OU.
Coach Beckie Francis credits non-conference games against teams like Florida State and Bowling Green with the team’s ability to pick up a second victory against a team from the Mid-American Conference.
“I just think it really helps playing a tough schedule,” Francis said.

Severovas nets 26 in Grizzlies win over Eagles--The Oakland Press

YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) — Vova Severovas scored a season-high 26 points, including 17 in the second half, and Brandon Cassise added 12 points to help Oakland beat Eastern Michigan 66-54 on Tuesday night.
The Grizzlies’ 6-4 start is their best since moving from NCAA Division II to Division I in 1999.
Jesse Bunkley and Brandon Bowdry each had 10 points to lead the Eagles, who are off to their worst start since also going 1-5 at the beginning of the 2001-02 season.
After Oakland hit the first basket of the second half to go ahead by 16, Eastern Michigan went on a 13-3 run to pull within 42-36 with 12:42 remaining. Bowdry sparked the Eagles with five points.
Severovas took over the game, however, by scoring 11 straight points to put the Grizzlies back up by double digits. Oakland later built its lead to as many as 20 points. The Eagles ran off eight straight points in the final minutes to close within 12, but that was as close as they could get.

COLLEGE HOOPS: Oden leads the way in OSU debut--The Detroit Free Press

Oden's Debut Highlights Buckeyes' Win--MICentralSports.com

Oden has double-double in Ohio State’s win over Valpo--The Oakland Press

MEN’S TOP 25

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The wait was worth it for No. 3 Ohio State and prized big man Greg Oden. In his first competition in seven months, the 7-foot freshman, touted by some as the best U.S.-born big man in a generation, had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Buckeyes past Valparaiso 78-58 on Saturday.
Oden had not played summer ball or with the Buckeyes since undergoing surgery June 16 to repair a torn ligament in his right wrist.
Daequan Cook scored 20 points and Ron Lewis had 10 for Ohio State (7-1), coming off a 98-89 loss at No. 7 North Carolina on Wednesday night. Mike Conley Jr., Oden’s teammate at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, added seven points and seven assists.
Samuel Haanpaa had 18 points, Brandon McPherson 11 and Urule Igbavboa 10 for Valparaiso (3-4), which lost its fourth in a row.
One of the highlights for Oden came with 6 1/2 minutes left. Ducking behind a teammate and then leaping high, he swatted Moussa Mbaye’s shot back at him. When McPherson got the rebound and drove the lane, Oden blocked that, too, prompting the crowd of 17,311 to shower him with a second standing ovation.
He had five blocked shots in 23 minutes.

Kangas’ four 3-pointers leads Oakland to victory--The Oakland Press

By CRYSTAL EVOLA Of The Oakland Press

ROCHESTER —Putting together two winning halves of basketball against highercaliber teams has been a challenge for Oakland University.
Things changed on Saturday.
Despite Wiconsin-Milwaukee’s second-half surge that erased a doubledigit differential, the Golden Grizzlies persevered and held on for a 76-70 non-conference win at the Oakland Athletics Center.
The Grizzlies entertained a crowded house and wowed the cable TV viewers at home while improving to 5-4 on the season.
The Grizzlies survived a scare against a team that’s won three straight Horizon League titles and has made two straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
OU snapped a six-game losing skid against Milwaukee in the series that dates back to 1969. Not a bad way to re-establish yourself at home after being out on the road since Nov. 12.
“Our goal this year is to be able to protect our home court and we were able to do that and get a big win,” OU sophomore guard Erik Kangas said.
Rick Billings hit a 3-pointer to spark a 5-0 run that gave the Grizzlies a a game-best 14-point advantage.
The Panthers (2-7) were determined to try to win their first road game of the season.
Junior Avery Smith sank a 3-pointer with 12 minutes left in the game to cap Milwaukee’s 12-0 run to pull within 44-42.
Smith came up in the clutch again with just under 10 minutes left when he hit a bomb of a 3-pointer to knot the game at 51 each.
Kangas responded on the next possession with a 3-pointer of his own to quickly give OU back the lead.
The two teams battled nipand-tuck down the stretch for the duration.
The feisty Smith singlehandedly kept Milwaukee in the game with his sharp shooting.
Smith came of the bench to shoot 6-for-10 from behind the arc in the second half en route to a career-best 36 points.
“He must have been feeling it big time tonight,” Kangas said. “He was making some shots that seemed like they had no chance of going in. He came ready to play tonight.”
The respect was mutual.
Kangas shot 4-for-6 from 3-point range for the day to finish with a team-leading 18 points and two steals. Kangas nailed a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left in the first half to help OU take a comfortable 38-28 into the locker room at halftime.
“Kangas did a great job,” Milwaukee coach Rob Jeter said. “I think he was the biggest difference, even though we were undersized in the middle.”
OU shot just 7-for-25 from the field in the second half, but it didn’t matter in the end. The Grizzlies made 3-pointers when they counted and they made 20 of 26 shots from the foul line in the second half to seal the victory.
“That’s a very good win for Oakland,” long-time OU coach Greg Kampe said. “The way we did it, I think, was good for me because we really went though that bad spell in the second half where we couldn’t make a shot and they had a kid who had a career night — and it wasn’t because we weren’t guarding him — and we really survived that.”
Freshman point guard Johnathon Jones hit a 3-pointer with 2:06 left in the game to give OU a 66-61 edge and bring the crowd to its feet.
The Panthers pulled no closer than four points for the remainder of the game, even though Smith sank another pair of 3-pointers in the fi nal 20 seconds.
OU senior center Shawn Hopes grabbed six rebounds and shot 4-for-5 from the field for 10 points in the fi rst half to get OU off to a solid start.
He muscled his way under the basket in traffic to put OU on the scoreboard on the game’s opening possession.
Hopes finished with 13 points and eight rebounds while being in foul trouble most of the second half.

Grizzlies roll past Rochester College--The Oakland Press

By CRYSTAL EVOLA Of The Oakland Press

ROCHESTER — Every team deserves to get a break in a tough schedule.
The Oakland University women’s basketball team got its breather on Saturday.
The Golden Grizzlies found themselves on the positive side of a completely lopsided matchup that ended with an 85-23 final against Rochester College at the Oakland Athletics Center.
“I think it helps boost our confidence up,” OU freshman guard Melissa Jeltema said of her team’s victory. “The players who don’t get to play a lot they got to play a lot today. A lot of good things happened with everyone scoring.”
OU held Rochester to just nine points in the first half and never looked back.
Sophomore guard Jessica Pike scored 11 points to highlight OU’s 16-0 run to open the game.
The win was a nice way to nurse the wounds caused by tough losses at Florida State, Central Michigan and No. 24 Bowling Green.
“We knew going into this non-league schedule that we were going to have some big games,” OU coach Beckie Francis said. “And it gets even bigger coming up. It’s nice when you come home to hopefully have a confidence booster.”
Pike led the way with 22 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field, eight rebounds, eight assists, eight steals and just one turnover in 25 minutes of play.
“I just thought her intensity was really high and she played really smart,” Francis said of Pike.
Jeltema took advantage of her opportunity to see extended minutes. She came off the bench to score 14 points and grab eight rebounds.
Rochester (3-6) failed to make a double-digit number of field goals, as the Warriors shot just 11.7 percent from the field for the game.
Troy Athens graduate Deana Donato led the way for Rochester with 12 points and two steals.
Freshman Hanna Reising was 4-for-5 from the field to add 12 points and have six defensive rebounds, as OU snapped a two-game losing skid.
Despite enjoying a hefty lead throughout the game, OU still hustled on defense and it showed in the final box score.
OU outrebounded its opponent 53-27 and finished with 16 steals.
The Grizzlies took advantage of the fact that a fair amount of fans stayed after the men’s afternoon tipoff to see what the women had to offer.
“I told the players that it was important to play hard, to dive for loose balls and play good basketball so we can increase our attendance,” Francis said. “I would think the fans probably enjoyed how we played.”

Grizzlies frustrated by near misses vs. big boys--The Oakland Press

Close calls

By CRYSTAL EVOLA Of The Oakland Press

ROCHESTER — Freshman Johnathon Jones has eight college games under his belt and he’s already frustrated. He has good reason.
The point guard is disappointed because the Oakland University men’s basketball team has been so close to making a statement against some of the country’s big boys, but has fallen short at the final buzzer.
The Golden Grizzlies will try to get over the hump when they face the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 4 p.m. today at the Oakland Athletics Center.
OU (4-4) is looking to rebound after suffering a second-half letdown that resulted in a seven-point loss at Cincinnati on Wednesday.
It was the second time this season that OU had a halftime lead against a Big East opponent on the road and then lost.
That was just one of several painful losses OU has endured during one of its most challenging non-conference schedules in school history.
OU played what coach Greg Kampe referred to as a very bad first half of basketball at Michigan State a week ago. The Grizzlies outscored the Spartans 40-31 in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome 4-for-18 shooting in the fi rst half.
Earlier last month, OU had a four-point lead at halftime against No. 5-ranked Pittsburgh. The Grizzlies couldn’t maintain their intensity and they lost by 11 points.
Playing tough against some of the country’s big-named teams does not offer any solace to Jones.
“It’s frustrating because we know that we can play those teams and we know that we can beat them,” said Jones, who made it to the state finals with Okemos High last season, “but we just get outside of our game sometimes and don’t finish the game like we should. It’s really frustrating because we know we have all the keys to win the game.”
The Grizzlies will look to learn from their previous experiences and take advantage of the fact that they’re back home for the first time since Nov. 12.
OU went 2-4 during its extended road trip.
The outcome could have been much better.
The Grizzlies need to simply find a way to play two solid halves of basketball against the same team.
“We’ve played one bad half of basketball all year and that was the first half against Michigan State,” Kampe said. “We’ve had seven and a half halves that have been really good or have been average. That one was really, really bad. That’s where my disappointment and my frustration is. But what I’ve learned in my 23 years of doing this, is this is a marathon and the only thing that matters is March. What we’re trying to do is prepare for March.”
OU has been competitive with its opponents because of its man-to-man defense.
The Grizzlies have held opponents to 28 percent from 3-point range and 42 percent overall.
The 42 percent is down from the 48 percent opponents shot a year ago.
“The strength of our team is our defense and our rebounding,” Kampe said. “We’re contesting shots extremely well. We’re playing with great energy. If we want to be successful, that’s got to continue.”
