HOOP NOTES--The Detroit Free Press

OAKLAND: The Golden Grizzlies are 15-11 and second in the Mid-Continent Conference at 8-2. They will win the league's regular-season title with victories in their remaining four games.

They kept a firm hold on second place by beating rival Valparaiso last Saturday, 64-61. Valpo moves to the Horizon League next year, but OU coach Greg Kampe and Crusaders coach Homer Drew have said they want to continue playing each other.

Oakland's rivalry with Valparaiso began during the 1999-2000 season, the Golden Grizzlies' first in the Mid-Continent Conference. They won the conference title, but lost twice to Valpo.

"One of their players came out in the papers and said, 'Oakland might have won the league, but everyone knows who the best team was,' " Kampe said. "I remembered that exactly."

OU lost 16 straight games to Valpo before breaking the streak last January at Valparaiso, 81-76.

After beating the Crusaders twice this season, what Kampe calls the "Valpo Curse" is broken.
