Oakland-IUPUI FOX Detroit notes

I watched this game on tape delay on FCS Atlantic Friday morning.

1. Mario Impemba, the TV voice of the Detroit Tigers, did the play-by-play with MUS alum Greg Kelser providing the color commentary. This was the 2nd of 5 games (I believe) that will be picked up this season by FOX Sports Detroit. The first one was Oakland's 10 pt. victory over Toledo, which somehow my DVR failed to record even though I had it scheduled.

2. This game was almost an instant replay of last year's FOX Sports Detroit OU-IUPUI game, where the Grizzlies led by 20 at the half, only to lose by 1 in OT. This year's 2nd half momentum swing was not quite as dramatic, but IUPUI did come all the way back from a 17-pt deficit to cut it to 2 with a minute or 2 left in the game.

3. Geroge Hill is back, maybe not 100% yet, but close enough. Teams that thought they might avoid him this year will be disappointed. He had a good game all things considered, though he fouled out down the stretch.

4. Shawn Hopes was a force on the offensive boards, getting put-back after put-back. The Jags could not seem to box him out.

5. Erik Kangas had a very good night from behind the arc.

6. In live chat during the Valpo-Cenntenary game on Thursay, another VU fan asked who people thought would be the one team that would make the most significant improvement this season, now that conference play has begun. After but a moment's thought, I said Oakland. I'm not sure Valpo has what it takes to make such a decisive improvement, though obviously I hope I'm wrong. I don't see UMKC and Western Illinois doing anything but flounder the rest of the way, based on what I have seen so far. Centenary, Southern Utah, and ORU both played well relative to preseason expectations, and probably will continue to do so at the same level. I'm not sure what to make of the Jaguars, they feel like a wildcard right now. I suspect the same can be said for them, except they probably have NOT played well relative to their preseason expectations, and I'm not convinced they'll show a significant improvement during conference play.

7. Oakland, on the other hand expected (I think) to do better than they have so far, and they seem to be turning it up a notch already, though they have a freshman point guard and the last few minutes of the IUPUI game were disappointing to Greg Kampe because they had trouble keeping IUPUI at bay. Still, I sense big things coming from OU during conference play, and they are my pick for biggest improvement, especially if Hopes can cotinnue his inspired play down low and Kangas can shoot the 3 consistently. One thing that is certainly missing is the Mike-Helms-type ball-hog mentality, and that has to be a good thing.

Saturday at the Mabee Center

Just a few observations from the Mabee Center this afternoon:

1 In the early going, every time Valpo tried to get the ball into the low post, the ORU defender was able to deny and steal the pass. VU stopped trying it after awhile, but did use it towards the end of the first half with slightly better results. Still it was hard to escape the reality that ORU is much too athletic for this Crusader team.

2. It was surprising to hear that Calum Mcleod scored 17 points. He did get loose down low several times in the 2nd half and was pretty much unstoppable. Unfortunately, on the defensive end, he and Skogland - both of whom are trying their best - just do not have enough bulk to hold their own against post players like those ORU has.

3. The turnovers may have slightly improved, I don't know. We still lost quite a few passes from our own carelessness.

4 The crowd would have been considered deeply disappointing had it not been an afternoon game (THe Harlem Globetrotters were scheduled for the evening). Still, the crowd seemed to give ORU plenty to feed off in this game.

5. VU was content to let Yemi Ogunye shoot from behind the arc, which he rarely did, but Adam Liberty burned Valpo numerous times. VU did play some man-to-man, but also resorted to zone defense, which still left ORU shooters wide open at times.

6. Scott Sutton remarked in the postgame that team chemistry seems to be coming together for the Golden Eagles.

In the earlier tilt, once again, the Lady Crusaders and the Lady Golden Eagles played a barn-burner, a real titanic battle that went down to the wire, with the Lady Crusaders prevailing by 3. The lead must have changed hands at least 15 times during the game.

Green was 8-for-13 from the field and 6-for-8 on free throws for ORU (8-7, 1-0). Sammy Hunter scored 14 points to lead the Leathernecks (4-10, 0-1), who have lost nine of their last 11 games.

Play-by-play notes second half

Valpo stormed out of the locker room scoring the first 5 points, 3 on Jake Diebler's 2nd 3 to lead 30-20. A 17-3 run overall. First media TO, 32-23 Valpo.

Derek Thomas tried a different lineup to start the 2nd half, but it didn't work. David Jackson picked up a foul or two guarding Caleb Green. WIU losing 35-20, almost 3 minutes gone. ORU apparently made a good defensive adjustment, moving Adam Liberty down low.

OU leading 40-26 over IUPUI.

Gents have closed the gap to 6. Jake Diebler hits ANOTHER 3! Gents turn it over again, Moussa hits a jumper, but Logan gets a dunk. Brandon hits a layup and gets fouled. Ya never like to give up a dunk, but Valpo is playing well on the offensive end and pretty good on the defensive end. 2nd media TO, Valpo 44 CC 33.

WIU is down 44-26, this sounds about what I expected from the Leathernecks on the Mabee Center floor.

OU is dominating on the Offensive boards and in TOs, leading 49-32.

Valpo is missing open shots again, and leads only by 6. The Gents could have cut it to 4, but they missed the front end of a 1 and 1. 3rd media TO, Valpo 46 CC 38, Moussa on the line for 2 shots.

The Jaguars have closed the lead to 10 only to have Shawn Hopes put back a rebound. 3rd media TO, OU 56 IUPUI 44.

Mike Jones says the Leathernecks shut down Tutt but failed to stop Caleb Green and that's why they trail by 19.

As has been all too typical this year, VU breaks down a bit down the stretch. Gents get a 3-pt play, only down by 2. Jake Diebler "was determined to get to the FT line" and did, hitting both.

Sure enough, Valpo bent down the stretch but didn't quite break, even withstanding a colassal no-call when Brandon McPherson got thrown down to the floor, immediately followed by a Valpo foul that allowed CC to tie the score from the line. But they missed both FTs, U was fouled on the rebound and hit both FTs. Final score: VU 66 CC 62.

ORU blew WIU out 65-46
Oakland also held off a furious charge by the Jaguars, winning 62-57
UMKC 86 Chicago State 78

Valpo hit 21-25 from the FT line, which is a nice change of pace.

That makes the first standings:

1. ORU 1-0
1. OU 1-0
1. VU 1-0
4. SUU 0-0
4. UMKC 0-0
6. CC 0-1
6. IUPUI 0-1
6. WIU 0-1

Play-by-play notes first half

"Neither team looking sharp in the early game." Thus begins another Valpo game, with Centenary finally breaking the scoreless tie 2 minutes in. Before I knew it, the Gents had shot out to an 8-0 lead before U finally hit a bunny. 10-3 at the first break. Tyrone Hamilton was not playing last year, and the Gents are better this year. Valpo misses a lot of shots, but a Haanpaa 3 and a McPherson lay-up off a steal brings it to 12-8.

WIU meanwhile is losing to ORU, 7-4, and Caleb Green is on the bench. IUPUI is losing at Oakland, and UMKC is leading Chicago State by 1. I can't get the UMKC webcast.

"Valpo is getting the much better shots and they're just not going in!" God, I hate it when that happens.

We seem to be trading baskets, 18-15 Gents 6:25 to go. I keep hearing the Gents missing a 3, I wonder if they have hit any. Haanpaa missed a wide-open 3. Gents just got a few ORs but no points. U finally took it to the hoop with success and can tie the score by hitting the FT. We seem to be hitting our FTs more. All tied at 18.

Valpo has stepped up their defensive pressure and we have the ball again. Missed another drive to the hoop, though. Brandon made a huge block and came down wrong on his ankle and he hobbled all the way to the locker room but turned around and is going to walk it off.

U hits another bunny, Valpo up 20-18. Gents miss another 3, Haanpaa drives to the hoop, but Stallings gets the charge call. Media TO 3:17 to go.

OU's Vova Severovas is apparently having a nice game according to the OU announcers. 28-19 OU with 4:16 to go. Vova hits another in the lane, already in double figures. Final media TO, 30-19.

2:48 ORU 26-16 over WIU final media TO.

U extends Valpo lead to 22-18 with a putback off an OR. Gents finally answer with a bucket. Skogland is playing, which is usually telling. Diebler dekes his man and hits a 3, that's nice to see because you don't see it very often. The Gents missed a shot at the buzzer, halftime VU 25 CC 20.

Other halftime scores: ORU 31 WIU 20 Caleb Green has 12 points. Oakland 35 IUPUI 24. UMKC 35 CSU 33.
