I will no longer be able to continue to maintain this blog. If anyone is still interested in news about basketball in The Summit League -- interested enough to take over the maintenance of this blog, feel free to contact me via email (the link is near the top of the page). I can provide a list of bookmarks and I can see about adding you as a user able to post to this blog, or you can if you wish find some other site to host a blog about The Summit League.

In any event, I will not be posting daily lists of news links for the 2008-2009 basketball season. It's been fun, but maintaining both this blog and a similar blog for fans of the Horizon League takes more time than I can afford to devote, as I discovered this past season.

If you want this blog to continue, the ball's in your court ;)

SOUTHERN UTAH

ACADEMICS: Southern Utah University had 89 student-athletes named to the 2007-08 Summit League Commissioner List of Academic Excellence as released by the conference.

The women's indoor track and field team led all squads with 17 total athletes honored with the award. Women's soccer and women's outdoor track and field followed with 13 honorees each.

Baseball was next with seven award winners, and SUU's women's cross country, men's golf, softball and men's outdoor track and field each earned five.

Men's basketball, women's basketball and men's indoor track and field each collected four recognitions, with women's tennis garnering three and women's golf and men's cross country each having two.

Those honored had to have at least a 3.000 cumulative GPA and sophomore academic standing. Freshmen, redshirt freshmen and first-year transfers were not eligible for the award.

UMKC assistant hired

Former Wyandotte High School basketball coach Wendell Moore will join Matt Brown’s staff as UMKC assistant basketball coach.

Moore spent the last two years as an assistant under Rex Walters at Florida Atlantic. Moore replaces Kareem Richardson, who left to become an assistant at Drake.

Moore spent five years at Wyandotte early in the decade and led the Bulldogs to a 14-7 record in 2004.

unior guard Gary Patterson (Bishop Noll) earned IUPUI's Top Gun Award as the team's top 3-point shooter.

Patterson etched his name in the IUPUI record books this past season by draining 93 3-pointers in 33 games to rank third all-time on the program's single-season list.

Patterson hit 11 3-pointers in the Jaguars' win over Southern Utah to set a single-game record in IUPUI's Division I era. The 5-foot-10 sharpshooter hit 44.5 percent of his 3-point shots and earned Second Team All-Summit League honors.

Patterson's teammate Bill Van Senus (Valparaiso) was honored with the Coaches' Award. Van Senus capped his career by playing in 27 games and starting five in his final season. The 7-foot center averaged only seven minutes per game, but posted career highs in points, rebounds and blocks.

Academically, he ranked among the top three on the team in GPA and was used at times as a defensive stopper.

When a team does not improve, the punishments can become harsher with three consecutive scores under 900, leading to a postseason ban. A fourth consecutive offense would prevent them from competing at the Division I level.

Schools already facing a possible postseason ban include football teams at San Jose State, Southern and Temple, and men's basketball teams at New Mexico, Centenary and East Carolina.

The NCAA on Tuesday hit more than 200 college sports teams with scholarship reductions and other sanctions because of academic shortcomings.

The programs posted subpar Academic Progress Rates (APRs), which have been computed by the NCAA for the past four years and hinge on retaining players and keeping them academically eligible. Twenty-six teams — including 20 in the longtime problem sports of men's basketball, football and baseball — were flagged as chronic underperformers and handed stiffer penalties including reductions in practice time.

Women's Basketball

The Kangaroo women picked up some valuable local talent with the signing of incoming freshmen guards Brianna Eldridge and LeAndrea Thomas.

Eldridge, who played for Blue Valley High School, was a finalist for the DiRenna Award which is given out on an annual basis to the outstanding women's high school basketball player in the Kansas City Metro area.

The Blue Valley senior was also named to the Kansas City Star and Metro Sports all-Metro first team.

Thomas spent her prep sports days at Hickman Mills and was ranked among the top 15 point guards in Missouri Class 5A. She was selected to the Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association 5A all-State second team.

Men's Basketball

UMKC Head Basketball Coach Matt Brown added a pair of ballers to his returning squad with eyes on picking up a couple more in the coming week.

The players that signed this week were incoming 6'4" freshman point guard Trey McKinney-Jones and 6'7" junior college forward Daniel Brady.

McKinney-Jones is a Wiscounsin product from South Milwaulkee High School. A member of the 2007 Adidas Double Pump Camp All-Stars, as well as the Southeast Wisconsin All-Star team, the graduating high school senior averaged 15 points, six assists and 5.7 rebounds per game during this past season.

Brady will transfer to UMKC from Northern Idaho Junior College. The incoming junior calls Lake Oswego, Oregon, home. He finished this past season with a 40.3 percent field goal percentage.

Brown was especially excited about the ability of both players to contribute right away and believes Brady in particular will be a tremendous presence on the boards for the Kangaroos.

The two newest recruits are an addition to a field of athletes that include speedy point guards Bakari Lewis and Fred Ford, as well as 6'4" shooting guard Dustin Dibble.

It was humiliating and demoralizing, however, seeing teams with real scoring weapons -- squads like Kent State and Portland State and Oral Roberts -- bow out so meekly on Thursday. The Tournament is the ultimate crucible where every flaw is cruelly exposed, where heroes throw off the shackles of their statistical shortcomings and achieve the incomprehensible. Geography lesson: Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt had to give her top-seeded Volunteers a little geography lesson Monday night.

It seems no one on the nationally-ranked squad had ever heard of Oral Roberts University.

"Where is Oral Roberts, coach?" senior guard Alexis Hornbuckle asked when the matchup flashed on the television screen during the Women's Selection Show for the NCAA Tournament.

Return trip: Oral Roberts will make its second trip to West Lafayette, Ind., for the NCAA Tournament.

The 16th-seeded Golden Eagles will
face Tennessee in first-round action Sunday at the Mackey Arena.

ORU visited West Lafayette in its first NCAA Tournament trip in 1999, when it lost to Purdue 68-48 in first-round action.

This is the Golden Eagles fourth trip to the big dance in the last nine years.

Lucky 13: ORU junior Jenny Hardin became the 13th player in ORU history to reach 1,000 points in her career and the eighth to do it in less than three years.

The former Claremore standout forward currently has 1,007 points in 80 career games.

Summit League (POY: George Hill, IUPUI; COY: Scott Sutton, Oral Roberts)

Mid-Majority Badlands Player of the Year: George Hill, IUPUI. The 6-2 junior came back from a foot injury that claimed the majority of his 2006-07 season, and re-established himself as the conference's best pure shooter. His 21.5 ppg came off 54 percent shooting, and he showed some rebounding prowess as well with a team-leading 6.8 rebounds.

Mid-Majority Badlands Coach of the Year: Scott Sutton, Oral Roberts. He's had to replace the two best players in school history (Caleb Green and Ken Tutt), but he's brought another generation of ORU heroes to a third straight league title. Consistent excellence despite changing personnel is one of the hardest things to do at this level, and the mark of a premier program.

TULSA, Okla. - Missouri-Kansas City shot 50 percent from the field, led by Alysa Klein's 25 points, and knocked the Westerwinds out of the Summit League tournament with a 62-55 quarterfinal victory.

Western Illinois (14-16) was limited to 28 percent shooting from the floor, making only 17 of 60 shots.

Gina Hugelier had 17 points to lead Western and Nicole Myers added 12 for the Westerwinds.

ORAL ROBERTS 84, CENTENARY 56: At Tulsa, Okla., the Gents were unable to stop the Summit League regular season champs, losing to the Golden Eagles in the first round of the conference touranment.

In a physical first half, Centenary struggled in the early going to find its shooting touch. Jerrald Bonham scored in the first minute on a putback, but the Gents did not sink another bucket until Tyrone Hamilton's 3-pointer 7 minutes into the contest.

Centenary went just 2-for-14 from the field until Hamilton drained another 3 with 6:55 remaining in the half.

Meanwhile, Oral Roberts continued to use its inside-outside game effectively. Shawn King and Marcus Lewis provided the punch from in the paint, combining to score 11 points in the opening stanza. On the perimeter, Moses Ehambe connected on 5-of-9 long distance shots for 15 points.

Lance Hill led Centenary with 17 points while Hamilton added 13.

CENTENARY: The Gents begin Summit League Tournament play today at 6 p.m. when they face Oral Roberts in the first round in Tulsa, Okla.

The game will be the second Centenary game of the day as the Ladies will have already played Oakland in the women's bracket at noon.

Centenary (10-20) is coming off of a 69-64 victory over South Dakota State on the road to end the regular season on a high note. Nick Stallings, who was named an honorable mention member of the All-Summit League team along with teammate Tyrone Hamilton, has been playing very well of late. The junior has scored 20 points or more in each of his last five games, which included a career-high 35 points against Southern Utah. He leads the Gents in scoring at 16.3 points per game and is also tops in rebounding at five boards per game.

WESTERN WAITING: Both Western Illinois teams hit the final weekend of the Summit League season playing travel partner, IUPUI, on Saturday in Indianapolis to close the regular season.

The Leathernecks are pretty much locked into either the fifth or sixth seed for next weekend's Summit League tournament. Western (12-16, 7-10 entered Thursday's league games in seventh-place, a half-game behind Southern Utah and a game and a half in front of Missouri-Kansas City. If they can catch Southern Utah which has difficult games against Oakland and IPFW, WIU will get the fifth seed.

Neither the North Dakota State or South Dakota State programs are eligible to participate in the postseason tournament. Both schools are in the final year of their transition to full Division I status.

On the women's side, things are simpler.

A win over IUPUI locks the Westerwinds (14-14, 12-5) into the top seed of the tournament. SDSU has already won the regular-season title.

A Western loss on Saturday coupled with Oakland and/or Oral Roberts wins forces the Westerwinds to have to wait until Monday, when the rest of the league closes the season, to see when they will play in the tournament.

The Summit League championships start March 8 in Tulsa, Okla.

NORTH DAKOTA STATE 91, CENTENARY 73: At Fargo, N.D., Brett Winkelman had 30 points and eight rebounds to lead the Bison over the Gents.

Winkelman was 9-for-13 from the field with two 3-pointers and went 10-for-11 from the line for NDSU (15-13, 9-8). He was one of five players in double figures.

Joining Winkelman were Josh Vaughn with 14 points, Ben Woodside with 12 and Michael Tveidt with 10.

The Bison led 40-32 at the half and shot 59 percent from the floor in the second half.
Centenary (9-20, 3-14) struggled from the field in the first half. It fell behind 26-9 with 8:44 left in the half and never recovered. It shot 33 percent in the first half.

Nick Stallings led Centenary with 23 points. Lance Hill added 14 and Tyrone Hamilton 12.

At Brookings, S.D., the Gents held the Jackrabbits to just 32 percent shooting on its own court to end the regular season with a victory. The win places the Gents in ninth place in The Summit League standings and the Jackrabbits finish last in their first season in the conference.

Centenary (10-20, 4-14 Summit) advances to The Summit League Tournament in Tulsa, Okla., which begins on Saturday, as the No. 8 seed and will face No. 1 Oral Roberts at 6 p.m.
